Chatpati Recipe

225g (8 oz) dry whole peas
1/4 cup seedless tamarind
100g (4 oz) potatoes
1 small cucumber chopped
1 tomato cubed
3 tablespoons sliced onions
1 egg boiled sliced
2 teaspoons panchforan
2 teaspoons cumin seeds
1/4 teaspoon chilli powder
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 tablespoon chopped coriander leaves
salt and sugar to taste
Clean, wash and soak peas with baking soda in water over night for 3-4 hours. Wash peas again. Add enough water and boil for 2-3 hours even more until peas are tender (pressure cooker needs 10 minutes). Boil potatoes, peel, make small cubes. Make small cubes of cucumber, tomato and onions. Roast and grind panchforan and cumin seeds. Soak tamarind in water and press through a strainer. Combine the tamarind puree with other ingredients except cucumber and egg. Mix well. Add 1/2 cup of water and boil for 30 minutes. Add cucumber. Add 11/2 cups of water and boil for 30 minutes.
